Jokkmokks Vildmark
On your way by dog sled

The winter in Lapland has its own personal allure. Starry nights and the Northern Lights´ play of colors, a pale winter sun that bathes the sky and the seemingly never-ending, snowy landscape with a touch of blue and pink. And what better way to enjoy this winter wonderland than on a sled pulled by a team of dogs? Here you will experience the breath-taking beauty of Swedish Lapland in a traditional and unique manner. From the Arvidsjaur Airport, first you will go to Jokkmokk by bus. You will also cross the Arctic Circle and just as the tradition when crossing the equator, we have also prepared an Arctic-style baptism for you here. A small village of cabins located near Skabramsjös and with a view of the never-ending woodlands of Lapland will first serve as your base for your adventure trip.

At the beginning of your adventure journey, experienced dog-sled guides will familiarize you with dog sledding. You will learn how to handle the dogs, how to harness them and finally how to drive the sled. You will then start the next day. Two participants per sled with 5 dogs each. The sleds are loaded with the necessary equipment and then the journey over lakes are moors and through deep, snowy woodlands. You will have a break for lunch. Sitting in reindeer skins around a cozy campfire, you can partake of grilled sausages and meat with bread and warm coffee brewed over an open fire.

Then your journey continues on. In total, you must cover a stretch between 20 to 30 kilometers a day, a challenge for both man and dog. In the afternoon you will reach our Vildmarkcamp. A large teepee-like structure called a kote which offers room for up to 12 persons, will already be built for you. Now it is time to care for the dogs and give them the necessary affection too. Then it will be time for your own dinner and reindeer meat is truly a delicacy! In the evening, you will the opportunity to explore the surroundings of the camp with your snowshoes. You will spend the night in the large kote that is heated with a wood-burning stove.

The next day, life in the camp begins first of all with everyone working together to prepare breakfast for both man and dogs. The sleds will be loaded, the dogs will be harnessed to the sled and off you go. This route is more difficult than the day before. Then if you are lucky, you might be able to see animal tracks but not only of reindeer or elk! Another break is planned for lunch and then you will reach the base camp in the afternoon. Following another night´s stay in the village, we have planned a visit to the Fjäll and Sami Museum in Ajtte after breakfast. You can learn about the Sami culture, the flora and fauna of Lapland, and history here. Then you will take the bus back to the airport in Arvidsjaur.
